Exporting rambutan to Europe

Export Rambutan Entering Europe is a great opportunity to market and expand Vietnam's rambutan industry. To be successful in exporting, businesses need to focus on important technical characteristics.

Product specification

Quality:
  • Imports of fresh rambutan from third countries into the EU are subject to common marketing standards for fresh fruits and vegetables. These standards comply with the CODEX Alimentarius Standard for rambutan (CODEX STAN 246-2005). The product must be kept intact, clean and fresh, (practically) free from pests, damage, abnormal external moisture, internal browning and in a condition to withstand transportation and handling.
  • The rambutan must have reached a suitable level of development and maturity and under such conditions as to allow the rambutan to be transported to its destination in a suitable condition.
  • The quality of rambutan is classified into three types (see Codex Alimentarius Standard for rambutan): “Extra Class” – special type, “Class I” – type one, “Class II” – type two:
  • Special grade rambutan is a product of outstanding quality. Extra Class products are free of defects, except for very slight surface defects. Superficial defects must not affect the general appearance of the product, quality, storage and packaging.
  • Grade 1 rambutans are of good quality and may contain only minor defects: minor defects in shape and slight surface defects not exceeding 5% total surface area, excluding defects on the rambutan hairs .
  • Rambutans that satisfy the minimum requirements, but do not qualify for Class I or Special Class are classified as “Class II”. Type II rambutans may have defects in shape or shell surface not exceeding 10% total surface area, excluding defects in fruit feathers. However, the market for Class II products is very limited. Defects must in no case affect the flesh of the product.
  • Rambutan is best stored at temperatures between 8°C and 15°C with relative humidity between 90% and 95% to achieve a storage life of 2-3 weeks. There may be changes in skin and stem color after storage, but the flesh is not affected. Exposure to higher or lower temperatures results in rapid loss of quality. Rambutan is rarely shipped in large shipments and is mostly transported by air: it is common to ship within 24 hours of harvest, and preferably refrigerated.

Size and color:

According to the CODEX Alimentarius standard for rambutan, size is determined by the number of fruits per kilogram, or weight per fruit:

  • Dimensional tolerance is 10% according to the quantity or weight of rambutan corresponding to the instructions on the packaging.
  • Shells, hairs, and stalks are the main signs of maturity. Fruits with green skin and red-green spines are sour. Rambutans should have red or yellow skin and spines, depending on the variety.

Packaging:

  Wholesale packaging

  • Rambutans are usually sold in 2.25 kg and 4.5 kg paper bags. Sometimes pre-packaged in plastic trays (punnets). Larger boxes may also be used, especially if the product is repackaged in Europe. Please check the packaging again according to customer requirements.
  • The contents of each package must be consistent and contain only rambutans of the same origin, type or variety, quality, size and color. The display of the contents of the fruit box should be representative of the entire quantity of fruit.
  • Containers must meet the usual quality, hygiene, ventilation and resistance characteristics to ensure proper handling, transportation and storage of rambutan. Packages (or batches for products produced in bulk) must be free of any foreign substances and odors.
  • Consumer packaging: fresh rambutan is sold in wholesale boxes or in 300 or 500 gram boxes.
  • For export, rambutans should be comfortably packed in a 22 x 31 x 9 cm cardboard box, uniform in size, color and ripeness. The fruit is arranged lying down and in two layers. The net weight of the box varies from 2 to 4 kg depending on the importer's requirements.
  • Rambutan is supplied in loose fruit or in bunches. In case of loose fruit, it is necessary to cut the stem at the first node and the maximum length should not extend more than 5 mm beyond the tip of the fruit. In the case of bunches, each bunch must be tied naturally to the leaves and have several clusters, each cluster having a minimum of two rambutans. The base of each bundle should not exceed 20 cm in length measured from the attachment of the highest fruit.
