About the Algerian green tea market

Algeria imports about 50 million USD of tea of all kinds mainly from China every year. Import tax on green tea and black tea is 30%, withholding tax 2%, solidarity tax 2% and VAT 19% (total 53%).

Green tea is mainly consumed in the South of the country. Nowadays, tea is sold in tea rooms and coffee shops and is increasingly becoming a popular drink among the younger generation, alongside coffee. Famous store chains such as El Kheïma, Timimoune, Sahara or Sud are increasingly springing up in the capital Algiers.

Besides traditional tea drunk with mint, people today also prefer tea bags from international brands such as Ahmad Tea and Lipton of England.

In Algeria in particular and the Maghreb region in general (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya), drinking dates is an intimate time with family and guests. Guests are often invited to enjoy hot mint tea (with sugar), showing hospitality, brewed by the male head of the family.

Below, the Vietnam Trade Office in Algeria introduces a list of Algerian green tea importers for interested domestic companies to contact. Details see here
