On April 8, the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) announced details of the mixed-team race walking competition that will debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
This event replaces the 50 km walking event for men that was first included in the 1932 Olympics but was later dropped to ensure gender equality among the sports.
The new content will include 25 competing teams, each team has 1 male athlete and 1 female athlete, relay walking to complete a distance of 42.195 km divided into 4 stages.
IAAF CEO Jon Ridegon affirmed that this is a creative, dynamic and unpredictable competition format. He believes this competition format is easy to understand for fans, promises attractive competition, and more importantly, this event marks the first time athletics fully ensures gender equality throughout the entire competition. set of events at an Olympics.
The new competition is held at the same location as the individual 20 km walking event, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in central Paris. Qualified teams will be announced soon.
In June 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) accepted the proposal to include mixed team walking in the athletics competition of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
To date, all 48 athletics events at the Paris 2024 Olympics have ensured gender balance with 23 subjects for women, 23 subjects for men and 2 mixed subjects./.
