Tien Giang: Developing specialized fruit growing areas for export

According to the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, to date, the province has issued 271 codes, with 20,050 hectares of fruit gardens; including 175 codes with nearly 19,000 of 7 plant types.

Located in the Tien River area, with advantages in land, soil, and water resources to develop garden economic potential, Tien Giang has expanded the area of all kinds of fruit gardens to over 82,000 hectares, giving annual output. over 1.74 million tons of fruit supplied to domestic and foreign markets.

Currently, the province has formed concentrated specialized production areas such as the durian area with 17,650 hectares, with an annual output of over 278,000 tons of fruit; dragon fruit area of 8,900 hectares, yielding over 260,000 tons; grapefruit area of 4,730 hectares with over 86,000 tons; pineapple has 14,460 hectares with over 250,000 tons...

The province's main fruits are all sources of agricultural products with high export value. It is estimated that about 70% of Tien Giang fresh fruit output is exported to China.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Man, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, the locality aims to develop fruit trees into a strategic industry aimed at exporting, enhancing added value, and helping to innovate agriculture. industry-rural-farmers and successfully build new rural areas in the area.

Accordingly, Tien Giang prioritizes the development of fruit tree groups that have competitive advantages, large consumer demand, and have affirmed their brands in domestic and foreign markets such as Cho Gao dragon fruit, Tan Phuoc pineapple, and durian. Ngu Hiep, Hoa Loc mango,... in the direction of forming concentrated production areas, specializing in high-value goods.

In the immediate future, the province focuses on consolidating and improving the quality of specialty fruit growing areas: durian, Hoa Loc mango, Vinh Kim forge star apple... south of National Highway 1; At the same time, gradually convert ineffective rice growing land in the area between National Highway 1 and Trung Luong-My Thuan expressway to specialized fruit tree cultivation.

The Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinates with relevant sectors to focus on promoting agricultural extension, transferring science and technology for intensive farming, and directing farmers in areas specializing in fruit tree cultivation to develop organic agriculture and agriculture. Application of high technology and digital technology associated with collective economic development, production according to VietGAP or GlobalGAP safety criteria... From there, cooperatives linking businesses are formed according to the value chain model to solve output for agricultural products with export value.

Statistics show that Tien Giang currently has 54 cooperatives attracting nearly 19,000 members, 23 cooperative groups with nearly 1,000 members operating in the field of specializing in growing local specialty fruit trees. The above cooperatives take the lead in gathering farmers, transferring safe farming processes, and traceability towards GAP, linking fruit production-consumption-export with businesses inside and outside the province.

At the same time, cooperatives and cooperative groups in the field of specialized fruit cultivation also link businesses, supermarkets, and partners at wholesale markets to serve the domestic or export market. Prominent are My Loi A agricultural service cooperatives (Cai Be), Vinh Kim Cooperative (Chau Thanh), Ngu Hiep Durian Cooperative (Cai Lay)...

Famous for the Cho Gao dragon fruit brand, Cho Gao district built the largest specialized dragon fruit growing area in the province, with an area of over 7,000 hectares. Among them, 5,640 hectares are being harvested, with an annual output of about 190,000 tons of fruit.

Recently, implementing the goal of converting production, Cho Gao district also planted thousands of hectares of green-skinned grapefruit, concentrated in 4 communes: Luong Hoa Lac, Thanh Binh, Song Binh and Long Binh Dien. Among them, 770 hectares are being harvested, with an output of over 17,700 tons of fruit.

To sustainably develop the potential of specialty orchards, Cho Gao shapes concentrated specialized production areas to create a source of commodity agricultural products to enter the market. At the same time, strengthen the transfer of intensive farming techniques, especially the organization of good agricultural production practices (VietGAP, GlobalGAP) on fruit trees associated with the development of new cooperatives connecting market supply and demand according to value chain model.

To date, the entire Cho Gao district has 2,200 hectares of dragon fruit recognized as meeting VietGAP and GlobalGAP criteria. The locality is continuing to train and guide nearly 1,300 additional farmers in areas specializing in dragon fruit production according to the GlobalGAP process on a total area of 664 hectares.

Tien Giang is implementing many scientific and technological research projects to improve the value chain of the local specialty fruit industry with competitive advantages such as the Project "Developing durian trees in Tien Giang province to 2025,” Project to build a chain of production and consumption of durian in Tien Giang province in 2022, Project of a chain of production and consumption of Hoa Loc mango in Tien Giang province in the period of 2020-2025 and Orientation to 2030, Project "Development of dragon fruit trees in Tien Giang province until 2025"...

Recently, seizing the opportunity of many key fruit varieties in Vietnam being accepted for official export to the Chinese market, Tien Giang has increased propaganda, training, and encouragement for businesses, cooperatives, and organizations. Organizations and individuals prepare documents to be granted a growing area code and a packaging facility code for official export of local specialty fruits.

According to Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province Nguyen Van Man, to date, the whole province has issued 271 codes, with 20,050 hectares of fruit gardens. According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, Tran Hoang Nhat Nam, implementing the goal of converting production, diversifying crop structure, and adapting to climate change, as of early June , Tien Giang farmers have planted nearly 28,000 hectares of vegetables and food of all kinds, reaching about 48% of the whole year target.

Among them, the area of vegetables and food crops brought into rotation in difficult and coastal areas reached over 1,800 hectares. In the immediate future, people have harvested nearly 23,000 hectares with an output of over 496,000 tons of vegetables and food colors.

In 2023, Tien Giang farmers plan to plant over 55,000 hectares of vegetables and harvest over 1 million tons of products. Go Cong Dong district, located adjacent to the East Sea, attaches importance to developing cash crops in difficult coastal areas, adapting to climate change and mitigating natural disasters caused by drought and salinity during the annual dry season./.
