In mid-March, durian was considered "the best in the world" (unshelled) grown in Vietnam for 700,000 VND per kg but now only 300,000 VND.
On the Musang King durian trading festival, shop owners compete to sell this fruit at a price advertised as "unprecedentedly cheap": 200,000-300,000 VND per kg (whole fruit), while durian rice costs 700,000-750,000 VND. .
At the fruit store on Hai Ba Trung Street, District 1 (HCMC), each blister of 300 grams of durian sells for 200,000 VND, customers buy 1 kg for only 600,000 VND.
“The price of this type has dropped sharply in the past 3 days, so I sell 2-3 quintals each time. Compared to March, the number of imported durians increased four times," said an employee at this store.
In 5 years of trading durian, Ms. Loan, owner of an online fruit store in District 8, has never seen this type as cheap as this year. Each kilogram of peeled durian costs only 600,000-650,000 VND, down half compared to early March and 40% lower than imported goods.
2 years ago, Musang King had to order for a whole week to get it for sale. This year, when the crop is in full swing and the supply in the Western provinces is abundant, she said, "I order it every day."
Noted by VnExpress shows that the selling price of Musang King at the garden ranges from 130,000 to 150,000 VND per kg.
Ms. Oanh, owner of Musang King garden in Can Tho, said she had just sold 1 ton for 150,000 VND. This price has decreased by 40% compared to the April cut but according to Ms. Oanh, it is still highly profitable.
According to Mr. Dang Manh Khuong, a focal point specializing in selling durians in Can Tho, compared to mid-March, durian prices have decreased by about 50-70%, depending on the type, mainly because of abundant supply.
Durian varieties in the West are in full harvest, including Musang King. In addition, China reduced purchasing, causing goods to arrive in bulk at markets, pushing durian prices of all kinds to low levels, making it difficult for Musang King to compete. Currently, Musang King is only equal to the price of grade A organic Ri6 durian sold on the market.
Musang King originates from Malaysia, has been experimentally grown by people in the Central Highlands and Mekong Delta and has produced fruit for three years now. They are being sold in many fruit stores in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, and Hanoi. Compared to previous years, this year Musang King output increased 3-5 times.
This fruit is oval shaped, not too large, weighing 2-4 kg. The fruit's skin is dark green and has very large thorns. Characteristic of this type is the groove in the middle of the left stem and left body. The bottom part of the left clearly shows 5 large and thick segments.
