Hoa Bac commune currently has about 25 households growing watermelon (of which 16 households are local people, the rest are Quang Nam people renting land to grow) with a total area of 25 hectares.
Preliminary estimates of average melon yield in this harvest are more than 36 tons/ha, the total melon yield of the whole commune is estimated at 900 - 1,000 tons.
According to farmers here, currently, traders buy watermelons at a price of 5,000-6,000 VND/kg, previously the price was only around 2,000-3,000 VND/kg. This year's yield is quite good due to favorable weather. The average melon yield reaches tens of tons/ha.
As a longtime melon grower in Hoa Bac commune, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao said that this year's watermelon harvest is better than in previous years. Most garden owners have to hire workers to harvest watermelons in time to sell them to traders, mainly local people in the villages.
“On average, each harvesting team has about 10 people. Every day, workers can earn 500,000 VND to 1 million VND. Watermelon harvest is mostly done when the weather is cool, the melons are also fresh and of the best quality" - Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao said.
According to the representative of Hoa Bac Commune People's Committee, this year's melon growing area is about 25 hectares. Average yield is 360 tons/ha. The entire commune's watermelon output is estimated at 900 - 1,000 tons. Hoa Bac commune has about 25 households growing melons, of which 16 are local households, the rest are Quang Nam people who rent land to do so.
In the coming time, the commune will continue to monitor market fluctuations and advise people not to produce massively to avoid losing prices during the season.
