Connecting trade and logistics between Vietnam and Singapore

Recently, in Singapore, the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), Trade Office - Embassy of Vietnam in Singapore, Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and Singapore Logistics Association (SLA) organized Seminar "Vietnam - Singapore: Logistics, Trade and Connection".

The seminar is a program within the framework of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's business trip to explore, learn from experience, and introduce business cooperation and investment opportunities in the field of logistics between Vietnam and Singapore, taking place from September 1. April 2 to April 9, 2023. This activity is organized to implement the Plan to improve competitiveness and develop Vietnam's logistics services until the year assigned in Decision No. 200/QD-TTg dated February 14, 2017 of the Prime Minister. The working group was organized by the Import-Export Department in coordination with the Trade Office - Embassy of Vietnam in Singapore, with the participation of about 35 representatives from central and local state management agencies, Associations and Enterprises in the field of logistics.

Participating in the discussion were Mr. Mai Phuoc Dung, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Singapore; Grandfather Tran Thanh Hai – Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department – Ministry of Industry and Trade; Mr. Cao Xuan Thang - Head of Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore.

On the Singaporean side, there was the participation of Mr. Kho Choon Keng, Chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Singapore, representatives of the Singapore Logistics Association and nearly 100 Vietnamese and Singaporean businesses operating in the fields of logistics and manufacturing. export, trade.

At the seminar, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai - Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that in recent years, the Vietnam - Singapore strategic partnership has always developed positively. In the period 2018-2021, Vietnam's export turnover to Singapore grew steadily and in ASEAN, Singapore is Vietnam's 5th largest trading partner. In 2022, total import-export turnover between Vietnam and Singapore will reach 9.1 billion USD, an increase of 11.6% compared to 2021.

“Vietnam always considers ASEAN countries, including Singapore, as one of the important links in Vietnam's logistics development strategy. With the world's largest and most modern seaport system, Singapore is always among the top developed countries in logistics.” – Mr. Tran Thanh Hai affirmed.

As for Vietnam, Vietnam currently has over 30,000 businesses in the fields of transportation, warehousing, delivery, delivery... The Vietnamese Government identifies logistics as an important service industry, playing the role of connecting and supporting customers. support and promote socio-economic development. Therefore, the logistics industry is always of interest and focus in Vietnam. Vietnam's logistics performance index ranks 3/10 countries in Southeast Asia, and 39/160 globally. However, Vietnamese logistics businesses are still small, providing services that do not have high added value. Vietnamese businesses are eager to learn and seek opportunities to cooperate with the world's leading country in the field of logistics, Singapore.

The discussion was organized with the goal of enhancing opportunities for cooperation and connection between Vietnam and Singapore logistics, manufacturing and trade businesses. This is a very practical content for investment and trade cooperation between the two countries, as the economies of both countries have participated in deeper and broader integration into the world economy.

The discussion is divided into 2 parts, the discussion part of representatives of organizations and businesses and the B2B trade connection part. Mr. Tran Thanh Hai commented: "Through this discussion, businesses have more opportunities to interact and discuss the potential and opportunities for cooperation between the two countries; development trends of logistics as well as the situation and context of the upcoming business environment. At the same time, share business experiences and build business strategies aimed at effective operations and sustainable development. The event is also an opportunity for logistics businesses and manufacturing and trading businesses to connect, seek business cooperation opportunities, and sign contracts."

In addition to the exchanges and sharing of experiences and information from the discussion event "Vietnam - Singapore: Trade and connection", the Vietnamese Delegation had working sessions with agencies and organizations in Singapore such as the Embassy Vietnam in Singapore; Singapore Logistics Association; Enterprises Singapore (ESG) to exchange and share state management experience in the field of logistics, especially experience in building logistics service development strategies and coordinating national logistics development.

The delegation's work program also included surveys and visits to Singapore's seaports under the management of PSA to learn about Singapore's approach to automatic ports and green landscapes; visited and worked with Supply Chain City - a logistics service and urban solutions provider of YCH Group; Visit the cargo handling center at Changi Airport; Survey of logistics infrastructure of CapitaLand, Mappletree, Access World; Working with Trafigura and Sembcorp to exchange and promote cooperation in the field of logistics...
