The ASEAN-Australia dialogue relationship has developed and matured significantly since Australia became ASEAN's first Dialogue Partner more than three decades ago in 1974.
Over the past years, the ASEAN-Australia partnership has been continuously strengthened and enhanced. The leaders of ASEAN and Australia, along with New Zealand, met in 2004 to celebrate 30 years of their dialogue relationship. At the 2004 ASEAN Summit, Leaders adopted the Joint Leaders' Statement at the ASEAN-Australia and New Zealand Commemorative Summit to further expand and deepen dialogue relations. their cooperation in all fields, including political, economic and socio-cultural cooperation.
With a substantive relationship with ASEAN built over 35 years, ASEAN and Australia are preparing for the first ASEAN-Australia Summit to be convened in October 2010.
