ASEAN-Korea Free Trade Agreement (AKFTA)

  • ASEAN and the Republic of Korea (ROK) began sectoral dialogue relations in November 1989. Korea was granted full Dialogue Partnership status by ASEAN at the 24th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in July 1991 in Kuala Lumpur. Since the ASEAN-Korea partnership was elevated to summit level in 1997 in Kuala Lumpur, relations between ASEAN and Korea have expanded and deepened.
  • The relationship reached new heights with the signing of the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership at the 8th ASEAN-Korea Summit on 30 November 2004 in Vientiane and the adoption of the ASEAN Action Plan -Korea (POA) to implement the Joint Statement at the 9th ASEAN-Korea Summit on 13 December 2005 in Kuala Lumpur. ASEAN and Korea have made good progress in implementing the POA.
  • ASEAN and Korea celebrated 20 years of ASEAN-Korea dialogue relations in 2009. The ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit was held on 1-2 June 2009 in Jeju Island, Korea. The summit issued a Joint Statement on the ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit.
  • The 13th ASEAN-Korea Summit on October 29, 2010 in Hanoi agreed to elevate the ASEAN-Korea dialogue relationship from comprehensive cooperation to strategic partnership. To concretize the upgrade, the Leaders adopted the Joint Declaration on the ASEAN-Korea Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity and the Action Plan for the period 2011-2015.
