ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AIFTA)

At the second ASEAN-India Summit in 2003, ASEAN-India Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation was signed by the Leaders of both sides. The Framework Agreement has created a solid basis for the establishment of the ASEAN-India Trade and Investment Area (RTIA), including FTAs on goods, services and investment.

ASEAN and India signed the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods (TIG) Agreement in Bangkok on 13 August 2009, after six years of negotiations. The signing of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement paves the way for the formation of one of the largest free trade agreements (FTAs) in the world - a market of nearly 1.8 billion people with a total GDP of 2 .8 trillion USD. The ASEAN-India FTA sees tariff liberalization on over 90% of products traded between the two dynamic regions, including “special products”, e.g. palm oil (crude and refined). ), coffee, black tea and pepper. Tariffs on more than 4,000 product lines will be eliminated as early as 2016. The ASEAN-India TIG Agreement takes effect from January 1, 2010.
