Gia Lai aims to become the "capital" of macadamia in the future

Inheriting the advantages of climate, soil and the existing economic value of macadamia culture, Gia Lai is aiming to become the "capital" of macadamia in the future.

This goal is oriented by Gia Lai through Plan 1671/KH-People's Committee dated July 3, 2023 of the People's Committee of Gia Lai province; Macca sustainable development project for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050.

Macadamia trees have been widely grown in Gia Lai since 2012, when coffee prices decreased. Currently, this locality owns 2,200 hectares of macadamia; Of which, Kbang district is a key locality with the largest area of 2,000 hectares.

Kbang district has been a pioneer in piloting macadamia cultivation since 2010, with two typical macadamia varieties concentrated mainly in So Pai, Son Lang, Dak Rong and Krong communes. Currently, Kbang district has built 3 macadamia products that meet OCOP standards and nearly 20 processing facilities.

According to Mr. Dinh Van Hdăn, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Lang commune, Kbang district, in the commune there are about 500 hectares of macadamia trees intercropped with coffee trees.

Macca trees have very high economic efficiency, helping people's lives in the area significantly improve. Many households not only grow but also invest in machinery to process finished macadamia nuts. Local macadamia products are consumed in many large provinces such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Khanh Hoa...

A typical example is Mr. Thieu Viet Doan's family in Thong Nhat village, Son Lang commune, Kbang district. Mr. Doan's family has 2.5 hectares of macadamia trees, of which 1.5 hectares have been harvested with an average yield of 3.5 - 4 tons/ha.

Mr. Doan said that compared to coffee, growing macadamia trees has many advantages, the investment cost is only concentrated in the first year, after that each year only needing to fertilize 2-3 times and water regularly is guaranteed. . In addition, the macadamia tree also has good drought resistance and pest resistance.

Similarly, Mr. Lai Huy Hung's family in village 4, So Pai commune, Kbang district also has 3 hectares of pure macadamia. Mr. Hung said, if the weather is favorable, the expected yield can reach 5 tons/ha, minus costs, the revenue will be more than 300 million VND/ha. Currently, the family's income is about 130 - 150 million VND/ha, much higher than other crops.

Mr. Vo Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of So Pai commune, Kbang district shared that So Pai commune in particular and Kbang district in general have very suitable climate and soil conditions for macadamia trees to grow. In addition to coffee being considered the mainstay, macadamia also has very high economic value. Even at present, the economic value of macadamia trees is much higher than that of coffee trees.

Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kbang district Ma Van Tinh said that due to favorable climate and soil conditions and very suitable for macadamia trees, Kbang district has built a plan and orientation to 2030. has over 3,000 hectares.

To achieve this goal, since 2018, the locality has had a policy to support poor households and ethnic minority households to intercrop macadamia trees with other crops to increase their income. In addition, the locality has also coordinated with the Department of Science and Technology to complete procedures for trademark registration and brand certification.

Plan 1671/KH-People's Committee dated July 3, 2023 of the People's Committee of Gia Lai province, macadamia trees are focused on development in Kbang district and expanded to districts such as Dak Doa, Mang Yang, Chu Pah – localities with favorable and suitable weather conditions. Particularly, Chu Prong, Chu Se and Ia Grai districts are also monitored and evaluated for addition in the future. Gia Lai province aims to reach more than 4,000 hectares of macadamia trees by 2030 and maintain about 6,660 hectares by 2050./.
