Due to the successful season and high prices ranging from 50,000-100,000 VND/kg, in this year's durian crop, there are many durian farmer households in Can Tho with income ranging from several hundred million to several billion VND.
Farmers in Can Tho city are currently entering the time of full harvest of fruit trees.
While many types of fruit trees tend to decrease in price during peak harvest time, durian is a fruit tree that keeps its price high due to favorable exports.
With high selling prices combined with a successful season, bringing high income and profits, Can Tho farmers are honoring durian as the "king" of fruit trees today.
Currently in suburban localities of Can Tho city such as Phong Dien, Thoi Lai, O Mon districts, traders and gardeners are busy harvesting, gathering and transporting many types of fruit trees; Among them, the most abundant is still durian.
The highest selling price of the above fruit trees in the garden is only 25,000-30,000 VND/kg such as Hoa Loc mango, jackfruit, and mangosteen. Other fruits such as Taiwanese mango, Ha Chau strawberry, soursop, rambutan... are priced from only 3,000-12,000 VND/kg depending on the type.
Meanwhile, the price of Ri6 durian, a popular durian variety grown in Can Tho, is currently being sold by traders and businesses to the garden to buy in bulk (selling all the fruit output in the garden without classification) at a price above under 50,000 VND/kg.
Particularly, Thailand's Monthon durian variety has a selling price of around 77,000 VND/kg or the Musang King variety has a price of over 100,000 VND/kg, 10,000-15,000 VND/kg higher than last year.
In addition to getting good prices, durian farmers in Can Tho this year also had a successful harvest with an average yield of about 17-18 tons/ha, 1-2 tons/ha higher than last year.
Due to the successful season and high prices, in this season there are many durian farmer households with income ranging from several hundred million to several billion dong; Of which, most concentrated in localities such as Phong Dien district, Thoi Lai district, O Mon district.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Thoi, a durian farmer in Truong Lac ward, O Mon district, said his family had just harvested 45 tons of durian with a total income of more than 2 billion VND.
According to the agriculture and rural development sector of Can Tho city, the current fruit growing area in the city is over 24,600 hectares; Of which, the durian growing area is about 3,000 hectares, the harvested area is over 2,000 hectares.
However, because durian always has a higher price than other fruit trees, helping farmers have a large source of income and high profits, people focus on expanding their area very quickly by converting other types of fruit trees. Other fruits have low value and income, with prices fluctuating up and down, such as jackfruit, longan, oranges... switching to durian growing or converting from rice land to durian growing.
To support gardeners growing durian trees for favorable export, the agricultural sector of Can Tho city continues to guide technical processes in planting and caring for durian to achieve efficiency and quality; Strengthen the issuance of planting area codes, contributing to maintaining the high value of Can Tho durian fruit./.
