Vietnam - Korea Free Trade Agreement (VKFTA) was signed on May 5, 2015 and officially took effect from December 20, 2015. Compared to the ASEAN - Korea FTA (AKFTA), in the VKFTA, Vietnam and Korea give more incentives to each other in the fields of goods, services and investment. However, VKFTA does not replace AKFTA, but both FTAs are in effect and businesses can choose which FTA is more beneficial to use.
Progress:
- August 6, 2012: The two sides started negotiations;
- August 2012 - December 2014: The two sides conducted 8 rounds of official negotiations and 8 mid-term meetings, meetings at the level of the Head of the negotiating delegation,
- December 10, 2014: The two sides signed a Memorandum of Agreement on ending VKFTA negotiations,
- March 29, 2015: The two sides initialed VKFTA, aiming to officially sign the Agreement within the first 6 months of 2015,
- May 5, 2015: The two sides officially signed VKFTAContent of the AgreementPrologue
