The Vietnam - Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA) began negotiations in October 2008 and was signed on November 11, 2011. However, because each country's internal ratification procedures take a long time, the agreement will not officially take effect until January 1, 2014.

Chile is the first Latin American country that Vietnam has signed an FTA and this is also the 8th FTA that Vietnam has signed. Chile currently has up to 25 FTAs, trade with FTA countries accounts for 90% of the country's trade.
Trade exchange between Vietnam and Chile in the past 5 years increased on average by 26.8%, of which Vietnam's exports to Chile increased by over 41%. Signing this FTA, in addition to increasing access to the Chilean market, is also an opportunity for Vietnamese goods to penetrate other markets in the vast Latin America region.
