Workshop "Dissemination of new regulations on plant quarantine and food safety for mangos exported to the Japanese market"

On March 14, 2022 and March 15, 2022, in Cho Moi district (An Giang) and Cao Lanh city (Dong Thap), the Plant Protection Department coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development An Giang province and Dong Thap province organized 02 seminars "Dissemination of plant quarantine and food safety regulations for the Japanese market", especially regulations on granting growing area codes to this market. for farmers, cooperatives, and association halls in the two provinces of An Giang and Dong Thap. 

The workshop was held in a live format, with an additional 22 online consultation points in An Giang and 11 online consultation points in Dong Thap, with the participation of leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Department of Crop Production and Conservation. plant guards, leaders of the Department of Agriculture and plant protection stations of mango-growing districts of the two provinces.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong - Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department informed that Vietnam's fresh mangoes have been exported to 22 countries around the world. In 2021, despite being affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, Vietnam's fresh mango exports still increased sharply, with 600 thousand tons/year, an increase of about 70 thousand tons compared to 2020. Particularly for the Japanese market, Exported more than 600 tons, an increase of 3 times compared to 2020.

Regarding the issuance of planting area codes, to date, the whole country has issued 845 planting area codes, with an area of over 42,000 hectares, accounting for about 31% of the total mango growing area nationwide. The Mekong Delta alone has been granted 642 planting area codes, with an area of over 21,000 hectares, accounting for about 43% of the total mango growing area in the entire region. Of these, Dong Thap currently has 115 mango growing area codes, with a total area of about 5,570 hectares, accounting for nearly 56% of the total mango area in the province. An Giang province currently has 139 mango codes, with an area of over 6,734 hectares, accounting for 37% of the total fruit tree area.

Japan is currently a potential market for Vietnamese mangoes, however, currently the import requirements for this market have changed. Specifically, Japan requires Vietnamese mangoes to ensure regulations on growing areas; farming process; preliminary processing and packaging process... Therefore, to export stably to this market requires specialized agencies, localities and farmers to have appropriate and effective organization and supervision.

At the workshop, in addition to absorbing and discussing issues related to production that meets the regulations of the Japanese market. Many farmers and businesses also proposed solutions to expand the area of growing area codes: There needs to be a pilot model, including the participation and linkage of 4 houses, when the output is favorable, farmers will be strong. boldly participate and expand production areas according to a clean, safe model, meeting the requirements of expanding growing area codes; There are reasonable regulations for managing growing area codes, avoiding violations of using growing area codes like in the past...

Mr. Le Quoc Dien - Deputy Director of Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that Dong Thap province will continue to strengthen training to improve knowledge of safe production practices, issuance and management of planting area codes. , packaging facility with product traceability to serve domestic and export markets. Specifically, by 2025, the province's area coded for fruit trees is 40,810 hectares, vegetables are 10,549 hectares and rice is 190,170 hectares.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hien, Director of An Giang Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the issuance of codes, inspection, supervision, and management of growing areas are important for the export of crop products in An Giang province. Giang. Striving in 2022, An Giang plans to issue 860 planting area codes for key crops such as rice, mango, citrus, longan, jackfruit, durian and all kinds of vegetables, including rice. level 543 code on 38,010 hectares, vegetables level 185 code on 925 hectares and fruit trees level 131 code on 2,620 hectares.

These are also commitments in the plan that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang and Dong Thap provinces signed with the Plant Protection Department in the Program to develop planting area codes, packaging facilities and other facilities. model for using fertilizers and pesticides effectively and economically within the period of 2021 to 2025.
